Proclamation Declaring May as Bike Month in the City of Hopkins; Lindahl (Memo) CITY OF HOPKINS Memorandum To: Honorable Mayor and Council Members From: Jason Lindahl, City Planner Date: May 2, 2017 Subject: Proclamation Declaring May as Bike Month in the City of Hopkins _____________________________________________________________________ The League of American Bicyclists has estimated May as National Bike Month. During the Month of May, the League of American Bicyclists, the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota, Hennepin County and Three Rivers Park District will all be conducting events to promote bicycling. The City’s Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan calls for promoting bicycling within the community and special events like National Bike Month. To this end, the Hopkins rd Police Department will host the 3 Annual Kick Off to Summer Safety Event Saturday, th May 6 from 10 AM to 1 PM at the Hopkins Fire Station. At this event, the Police Department will provide bike safety information and bike helmets for sale. Throughout the month, the City will also promote bicycling safety and bicycling for both transportation and recreation. Staff recommends that the City Council approving the following motion: Move that City Council approve a Proclamation Declaring May as Bike Month in the City of Hopkins. A Proclamation Declaring May as Bike Month in Hopkins WHEREAS, the bicycle is an economical, healthy, convenient and environmentally sound form of transportation and an excellent tool for recreation and enjoyment; and WHEREAS, Hopkins’ road and trail system attracts bicyclists each year, providing economic, health and transportation benefits; and WHEREAS, the League of American Bicyclists, the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota, Hennepin County, Three Rivers Park District and the City of Hopkins will be promoting bicycling during the month of May 2017; and WHEREAS, these groups also promote bicycle year round to attract more visitors to enjoy our local restaurants, retail establishments, and cultural attractions; and WHEREAS, these groups also promote greater public awareness of bicycle operation and safety education in an effort to reduce collisions, injuries, and fatalities and improve health and safety for everyone on the road; and WHERAS, the City of Hopkins’ Pedestrian and Bicycle Plan calls for the City to promote bicycling within the community and special events like National Bike Month; and WHEREAS, throughout the month of May, the residents of Hopkins and its visitors will rd experience the joys of bicycling through the 3 Annual Kick Off to Summer Safety Event, commuting events or by simply getting out and going for a ride; and NOW THEREFORE, I, Molly Cummings, Mayor of the City of Hopkins in the State of Minnesota, along with my fellow Council Members, declare May as Bike Month in the City of Hopkins.
