SUBJECT: Bike Parking Plan
Background
City staff have been working on a comprehensive bike parking plan for downtown Hopkins.
th
With the completion of the cycle track along 8 Avenue anticipated this fall, we expect to see an
increase in the number of bicyclists coming to Hopkins. Further, the city would like to promote
biking as an alternative to driving to Hopkins. Lack of adequate quality bike parking has been a
problem noted both by visitors and residents. In addition, Public Works has expressed concern
over bikes being locked to trees, benches, and sign posts, all of which are not designed to serve
that purpose and can be damaged when bikes and locks come into contact with them.
City staff have been working with a company called Parkitect to develop a bike parking plan for
downtown Hopkins and to identify locations for additional bike parking. Parketect has been
working with the designers of the Artery to create a design and color for the racks that will work
throughout downtown, including on the Artery.
Staff will provide an update of the bike parking plan process and present an estimated cost to
implement the plan as well as revenue source.
