Resolution Encouraging the People of the City of Hopkins to Attend
the Grand Opening of the Minnesota State Capitol
Proposed Action.
Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Move that Council adopt resolution 2017-
048 a Resolution Encouraging the People of the City of Hopkins to Attend the Grand Opening of
the Minnesota State Capitol.
Overview:
After four years and a $310 million restoration, the Minnesota State Capitol is open to the public.
Our beautiful Capitol has been returned to its former glory and is ready for the next 100 years!
To commemorate the occasion and to invite Minnesotans back to the People’s House, there will
be a Grand Opening Celebration held on August 11, 12, and 13. The celebration will have
something for everyone a formal ribbon cutting ceremony, Hot Dish lecture series, diverse
performances, exclusive tours, fireworks and more! With featured events to entertain
Minnesotans of all ages from all corners of the state, the weekend will be educational, interactive
and FUN! Most of the events are free, or offered at a very low cost.

RESOLUTION ENCOURAGING THE PEOPLE OF THE CITY OF HOPKINS TO ATTEND
THE GRAND OPENING OF THE MINNESOTA STATE CAPITOL
WHEREAS, the Capitol of the State of Minnesota is having a Grand Opening celebration on
August 11, 12, and 13, 2017.
WHEREAS, Governor Mark Dayton has asked that the mayor and the people from the city of
Hopkins, Minnesota come to Saint Paul and celebrate the Grand Opening of the Minnesota State Capitol.
WHEREAS, the Grand Opening celebration is following the four year, $310 million dollar
restoration project that has returned the Capitol to its former glory and will position the building to be
able to meet the needs of the public for another 100 years with improved functionality.
WHEREAS, the Capitol was designed and built by Minnesota’s native son, Cass Gilbert, and the
architectural design elements of Cass Gilbert’s work were among the most important aspects of the
restoration.
WHEREAS, during the Grand Opening there will be concerts, lectures, exclusive access tours,
fireworks and much more. The events will be interesting, educational, and fun and were created to
entertain Minnesotans from across the state of Minnesota.
WHEREAS, when the Capitol building originally opened in 1905 there was not a celebration,
making this the first ever Grand Opening of the Minnesota State Capitol.
WHEREAS, the Minnesota State Capitol Building is the People’s House. It is important to the
State of Minnesota that Minnesotans use their State Capitol in ways that are meaningful to them, and that
the Capitol is a place where all people feel at home.
WHEREAS, The Grand Opening of the State Capitol Building is an opportunity to invite
Minnesotans back to the Capitol and for them to get familiarized with their newly restored space.
BE IT RESOLVED, the City of Hopkins on behalf of the Governor of the State of Minnesota,
encourages the people of the city to attend the Grand Opening of the Minnesota State Capitol August 11,
12, and 13, 2017.
