APPROVE 2002 SERGEANT'S CONTRACT
Proposed Action
Staff recommends that the Council approve the following motion: Move approval of the 2002 Contract for
the Sergeant's Union.
This action will ratifY the 2002 contract with the Sergeants Association, LELS Local 171.
Overview
The contract calls for a 3.0% wage increase effective January L 2002 and a .5% wage increase effective
June 30, 2002. There is an increase of$45.00 per month for health, life, and dental insurance.
Primary Issues to Consider
. How does this agreement fit in with the 2002 budget?
The City budgeted 3.5% for cost of living adjustments and $30.00 per month for benefit increases. The
total cost of the proposed settlement is approximately what was budgeted. The extra cost of the
insurance is offset by the phased increase in wages.
. . How does this agreement compare to other contract settlements for 2002 in tern1S of wage and benefit
increases?
Settlements for other cities have generally been in the range of 3.5%. The $45_00/month increase in
insurance is in the range of increases in other cities.
Alternatives
1. Approve the contract. Retroactive pay and benefit increases will be included in the next payroll.
2. Do not approve the contract. Stan would have to renegotiate the contract-
Staff recommends Alternative # I.
