Stadler, Public Works Director Date: February 7, 2002 Subject: County Road 73/5 Intersection Project Update The next Task Force Meeting is on Friday, February 8 at 8:00 a.m. There is currently a disagreement between the City Task Force and Hennepin County regarding the signal system design. The Task Force would like signal poles in the medians with shorter overhead mast arms. Hennepin County remains opposed to this for safety and . maintenance reasons, i.e., poles in the medians are more susceptible to knockdowns. Jim Grube, Hennepin County Director of Transportation, will attend the February 8 meeting to present his views and hear the concerns of the Task Force. City and Hennepin County staff will also discuss the potential access impacts to the property at the northeast quadrant of the intersection. Related to this issue is the need for a retaining wall to accommodate a potential future right turn lane at the eastern Minnetonka Blvd approach to the intersection - see attached drawings. Also attached is the preliminary cost sharing estimate. The proposed city cost of $619,193 is significantly higher than our CIP budget amount of $200,000. The reasons are: the addition of the retaining wall ($100,000), utility improvements not included in the CIP budget ($100,000), right of way costs ($65,000), and the County's proposal that Hopkins pay 77% of the cost for the concrete pavement ($186,425 of a total $241,195 concrete pavi ng cost).
