APPROVE INCREASE IN NON UNION WAGES
Proposed Action
Staff recommends that the Council approve the following motion: Move approval of wage and benefit
increases for non-union employees for 2002.
This action willl1latch the increase negotiated with the clerical and technical employees.
Overview
The proposed increase includes a 2.5% wage increase effective January 1,2002 and a 1 % wage increase
effective June 30, 2002. There is an increase of$50.00 per month for health, life, and dental insurance.
Primarv Issues to Consider
. How does this agreement fit in with the 2002 budget?
. The City budgeted 3.5% for cost of living adjustments and $30.00 per month for benefit
1l1creascs. The total cost of the proposed settlement is approximately what was budgeted. The
extra cost of the insurance is offset by the phased increase in wages.
. How does this agreement compare to other contract settlements for 2002 in tell11S of wage and
benefit increases?
Settlements for other cities have generally been in the range of 3.5%. The $50.00/month increase
in insurance is in the range of increases in other cities.
Alternatives
1. Approve the wage and benefit adjustment.
2. Do not approve the wage and benefit adjustment.
Staff recommends Alternative #1.
