APPROVE 2002 DISPATCHER'S CONTRACT
Proposed Action
Staff recommends that the Council approve the following motion: Move approval of the 2002 Contract for
the Dispatcher's Union.
This action will ratify the 2002 contract with the Dispatcher's Union, LEiS Local] 43.
Overview
The contract calls for a 2.0% wage increase effective January I, 2002 and a 3% wage increase effective
June 30, 2002. Insurance benefits are increased to match those of the police officers.
Primary Issues to Consider
. How Joes this agreement fit in with the 2002 budget?
The City budgeted 3.5% for cost of living adjustments and $30.00 per month for benefit increases. The
total cost of the proposed settlement is approximately $2,500 more than was budgeted. The extra cost of
the insurance is somewhat offset by the phased increase in wages.
. . How does this agreement compare to other contract settlements for 2002 in terms of wage and benefit
increases?
Settlements for other cities have generally been in the range of 3.5%. The additional wage increase was
necessary to keep Hopkins competitive with other cities that have dispatchers.
Alternatives
1. Approve the contract. Retroactive pay and benefit increases will be included in the next payroll.
2. Do not approve the contract. Staff would have to renegotiate the contract.
StatT recommends Alternative # 1.
