.
APPROVE 2003 DISPATCHER'S CONTRACT
Proposed Action
Staff recommends that the Council approve the following motion: Move approval of the 2003 Contract for
the Dispatcher's Union.
This action will ratify the 2003 contract with the Dispatcher's Union, LELS Local 143.
Overview
The contract calls for a 1.5% wage increase effective January 1, 2003 and a 1.5% wage increase effective
June 29, 2003. Dispatchers will also receive an additional .20 per hour effective June 29, 2003.
Primary Issues to Consider
. How does this agreement fit in with the 2003 budget?
The City budgeted 3% for cost of living adjustments and $10.00 per month for benefit increases. The
total cost of the proposed settlement is approximately $1,200 less than was budgeted.
. How does this agreement compare to other contract settlements for 2003 in terms of wage and benefit
increases?
Settlements for other cities have generally been in the range of 3.5%. The wage increase was necessary
to keep Hopkins competitive with other cities that have dispatchers. The 2003 settlement will keep
Hopkins Dispatchers at the average salary for Dispatchers in the metro area.
Alternatives
1. Approve the contract. Retroactive pay and benefit increases will be included in the next payroll.
2. Do not approve the contract. Staff would have to renegotiate the contract.
Staff recommends Alternative #1.
Supportine Information
. A copy of the contract is available from the Assistant City Manager.
