Appointment of Brian HunkeNovember 20, 2018 Council Report 2018-125
Approve Resolution Appointing City Council Member
Proposed Action
Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Motion to Adopt Resolution 2018-083
Appointment to City Council Seat.
Brian Hunke will formally be appointed to the City Council with the resolution adoption.
Overview:
A vacancy was declared on the Hopkins City Council due to the resignation of Katy Campbell.
The City Charter states that the City Council is required to appoint an individual to complete the
unexpired term on the City Council until the next election.
The City Council requested applications from interested residents in October and conducted
interviews on November 13 and 19. Based upon the interviews, the City Council reached a
consensus to appoint Brian Hunke to fill the vacant seat.
Primary Issues to Consider:
• Brian Hunke is eligible to be given the oath of office immediately upon the appointment and
would begin his term thereafter.
• There are more than two years remaining in the original term of office so a special election
must be held to fill the final two years. The election will be held in conjunction with the
municipal election on November 5, 2019. Whoever is elected to the two year term will take
office as soon as they receive a certificate of election which will be within 10 days of the
election.
