CITY OF HOPKINS
Memorandum
To: Honorable Mayor and Council Members
Mike Mornson, City Manager
From: Nate Stanley, City Engineer
Date: October 4, 2019
Subject: Interlachen Park Streets - Edge Treatment Alternatives
_____________________________________________________________________
PURPOSE
To provide an update to the City Council that staff has been evaluating various edge
treatment alternatives to concrete curb and gutter for use in the upcoming Interlachen
Park reconstruction project.
INFORMATION
At the September 17, 2019 city council meeting a public hearing was conducted in
advance of ordering final design for reconstruction of streets and utilities in the
Interlachen Park neighborhood. During the hearing some residents voiced opposition to
the incorporation of concrete curb and gutter as the edge treatment along roads.
Council ordered the final design, but directed staff to investigate alternatives to curb
and gutter. Council will make a decision regarding whether concrete curb and gutter or
an alternative edge treatment will be implemented at the October 15, 2019 meeting.
Staff has been working with Bolton & Menk and meeting with residents to discuss
concerns, develop alternatives, and determine a process and criteria for evaluation.
Staff will be providing an update regarding the review of curb and alternatives at the
work session.
FUTURE ACTION
At the October 15, 2019 City Council meeting staff will recommend an edge treatment
for incorporation into the final design.
