Acoustical Treatment of the Pavilion's Arena

Re:
.
After researching acoustical treatments for the Pavilion and due to the variety and different
qualities of acoustical materials available, staff recommends hiring an acoustical engineer
consultant. An engineer would be independent from any acoustical material vendor and
would be able to provide an unbiased assessment of the acoustic needs for the Pavilion.
Engineering services would include: measuring the space, an onsite sound test, computer
simulations with the data collected, options for proper acoustical treatment, estimated costs
and audio results of the options so we can better decide on an option, and a list of vendors
that can provide the acoustic materials of the option chosen. The cost of the engineering
services are estimated to be between $1,200 and $2,000 to be paid from the Pavilion's
enterprise fund with a possible payback to the enterprise fund after a source of funding for
the acoustic project has been identified. Having the space engineered will most likely lead
to a savings of costs and quantity of materials needed. Staff feels having the acoustics of
the arena engineered would provide the best course of action to assure the results needed
at the lowest cost.
The total estimated cost for the purchase of acoustic surfaces is $25,000 - $45,000 for the
arena. The wide range of costs is due to the type and quantity of treatment possibly needed.
Attached is a proposal from one vendor, a photograph of a project done at the U of M
women's arena and information about acoustic materials.

Remarks:
After evaluating the numbers I suggest one of the following:
quote #1 : 2000 hanging PVC 2'X4'X1" Baffles will drop the reverb time in the room
from 5.2 seconds(with turf)7.26 seconds with ice - all the way down to 1.39 seconds
This would bring speach intelligibility levels from 1 in the untreated space to 61 in
the treated space. Cable/hooks through eyelets -simple installation. School colors or
white available. Ask for installation quote from Minnetonka Sound if needed. See
graphs.
Quote 2 would have quilted curtain material around the boards at one end of the rink
and 20 foot long curtain panels that would drop from a cable/hook system from the
ceiling across the far blue line. This alone would get you to a 3.92 reverb time so you
would need 1000 hanging baffles in addition to get to the 1.39 second time from
above. This is a more expensive approach with the same acoustical results and
would make you hang the panels over the ice the opposite direction during Ice
season. More labor intensive but would give you a more performance venue look
during the non ice season.
We can include an installation quote if needed through Minnetonka Sound.

THE HEAT-SEALED VINYL
COVERING MAKES THESE
BAFFLES THE PERFECT
ECONOMICAL SOLUTION FOR
GYMNASIUM APPLICATIONS.
KB-803 noise control baffles are the ideal economical solution to reverberant noise problems in cafeterias, gym-
nasiums, classrooms, clean rooms, and laboratories. Used to reduce overall noise levels, these baffles are sus-
pended from wires or from the structure near the noise source in either a' parallel or honeycomb pattern (see
reverse for example).
Model KB-803 baffles are constructed of 2.7 PCF fiberglass core which is encased in a 3 mil (white) or 4 mil
(black), fire retardant vinyl film cover. The vinyl is heat sealed on three sides to create an air-tight seam. For
simple and easy installation, each baffle has two brass grommets along the top edge. KB-803 baffles are also
available covered in white Tyvec material.
