Memo - Depot Coffee House Finances

Depot Coffee House Finances
As the City Council is aware, the Depot Coffee House is struggling with its finances. Based on
past directives from the City Council I have been working with the partners and the Depot board
and staff to review and find ways for both short- and long-term viability of the project.
Attached is information from the Depot outlining both short- and long-term plans to address the
financial situation. You will see from the information that the Depot can be viable without
additional partner subsidy if they are successful in their grant writing and fundraising
campaigns. Anthony Hall and Kathleen Taber will be present at the work session to discuss
these plans and to answer any questions the Council may have.
On the positive side, you can also see from the kid counts that the facility is well used and in
many ways is accomplishing much of the mission that was established when the facility was
envisioned. There are other areas wherein there are still mission related issues to be
addressed.
On the finances, I have informed the partners and the board that I have not received authority
to provide subsidies from the city, and that any deficits would need to be handled in a
partnership and cooperative manner. I wish to discuss this issue with the Council at the work
session. In short, Park Nicollet Foundation has indicated that the Depot has pretty well
exhausted the monetary capacities of Park Nicollet to assist in straight grants to the facility.
They are continuing to offer human resources and ideas to assist in fundraising efforts. The
YMCA has indicated that they are in a position to cover the cost of Anthony's time for a portion
of the year, should a deficit position be encountered. They have stated that if by year-end
there is a positive balance, they would wish to be reimbursed for those risks.
The School District, through the Reduce the Use campaign, has offered a $10,000 grant and
has discussed ways in which the students may be able to access additional mini-grants on a
project by project basis. It remains unclear whether the school's general fund will be able to
assist in deficits due to their financial position within their operations budget. I am, again,
looking for direction from the Council on our position relative to deficit funding.
Please contact me prior to the meeting if there is any additional information you would like
assembled.
