Letter to City of Hopkins - Sign Placement in Residential Yards ." .." Charles & Linda Heubach 11118 Minnetonka Boulevard Hopkins, MN. 55305-4410 . Mayor Eugene (Gene) J Maxwell 1010 First 8t. 8. Hopkins, MN 55343 Saturday, May 19,2001 Dear Mayor Maxwell; This mornIng I removed (and recycled) 22 mostly comnlerciallawn signs from the comer of Minnetonka Boulevard and County Road 73, outside of my hOlue. These commercial sign ordinance violations have reached epidemic proportions because local units of government have not enforced th~ir sign ordinances and the posters know it. These ordinances must now be enforced. The blight of lawn signs by garage sale operators has always been difficult for those of us who live in more public locations, but we have always accepted the fact that the general public doesn't think very much about how incredibly rude posting their tasteless signs on our personal residential property really is. (One fellow, who actually knocked on my door and demanded the return of his sign, screamed at me that his sign cost him five dollars!) But it is not private citizens with whom I am primarily concerned. F or the past several years' cOmlnercial entities have begun posting signs every weekend. These are posted under cover of dark on Friday and removed again Sunday night or Monday luorning. The primary violators are apmiment rental communities in the City of Minnetonka. I have already spoken to the sign posters, requesting that they stop, and have been ignored. As a citizen of Hopkins, I am requesting that my elected representatives direct the appropriate city departments to enforce the ordinances, particularly against those who post for commercial profit. These posters should be given apprqpriate warning by a uniformed police officer or a letter from a city official, follow"ed up by ticketing and fines for future violations.l I will be happy to provide evidence of violations. I am also requesting that the City of Hopkins communicate and cooperate with the City of Minnetonka in insisting that the reasonable right of it's citizens to enjoy freedoln from commercial postings in areas zoned as single faluily residential (and particularly on their homestead) be protected.
