CITY OF HOPKINS
Memorandum

Subject: Trunk Highway 7 Road Safety Audit
_____________________________________________________________________
PURPOSE
Minnesota Department of Transportation (MNDOT) completed a road safety audit for
Trunk Highway 7 (TH 7) earlier this year and will be presenting the findings to mitigate
safety concerns along the roadway.
INFORMATION
MNDOT had programmed a road safety audit for TH 7 in response to public concerns
surrounding a fatal accident last year. The study corridor extended from Hollywood
Township in Carver County, to St. Louis Park in Hennepin County. The corridor was
classified into segments based on characteristics of the surrounding area; Hopkins fell
into the easternmost segment classified as primarily an urban setting.
MNDOT worked with local agencies to review safety concerns, obtain public input and
conduct field reviews. Traffic volumes and speeds throughout the corridor were
evaluated. A review of recent improvement projects and planning and engineering
studies was completed. Crash data and trends were analyzed and intersections were
assessed. Once the data was collected and analyzed, potential safety projects and
solutions were identified and recommendations were made for short-term and long-term
timetables.
FUTURE ACTION
This item requires no action by the City, MNDOT has created this study and it will be
made available for reference to agencies along the corridor.
