It is time to present the awards for the 2001 Hopkins Community Image Awards. The awards
are given annually to individuals and businesses who have made a visual improvement to their
property or have demonstrated continued superior maintenance of their property, which in turn
has a significant positive impact on the image of the City of Hopkins. Three categories of
awards are given. They are:
Single-Family Residential
Multi-Family Residential
Commercial/Industrial/Office
Nominations for this year's awards were accepted throughout the year and the five-member
HCIA Review Committee has reviewed those nominated properties. Five properties and their
owners were recommended to receive awards which will be presented at the October 16, 2001
Hopkins City Council Meeting. They are as follows:
SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL
Brad & Debra Knudson - 424 Murphy Street
The Knudson's home is very well maintained, with an attractive paint scheme and colorful window
boxes. Unique landscaping includes the use of steel and wooden plows and wheels along with bright,
exotic-looking flowers. As one HCIAjudge commented, "The home generates a very warm feeling."
Debbie & Jerry Barcel- 30 16th Ave. N.
The Barcels have added an attractive front porch to their well-kept home that nicely compliments the
original architecture. The porch is decorated by colorful plants and flowers and extends into the fully-
landscaped yard which "adds charm and character to the avenue."
Molly Cummings & Sheldon Berg - 40~ 10th Ave. N.
Molly and Sheldon have done extensive landscaping to the front yard of their home, removing old
shrubbery and replacing it with wonderful flowers, plants and a fountain. They also added a fence to the
boulevard and a screened-in porch was remodeled into a new three-season room. The home and yard
present a clean, inviting image and have been meticulously cared for.
J
MULTI-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL
Patricia Carlson - 305/307 12th Ave. N.
Ms. Carlson owns this twin home and occupies one-half of the home. Extensive landscaping, adds to
the appeal of this pleasant home. An arbor entrance positioned between two shade trees echoes the
home's roof architecture and presents a welcoming gateway into the lush yard.
COMMERCIAL/INDUSTRIAL/OFFICE
Peter Mason - 801 Mainstreet (Quiznos Building)
This building has recently undergone extensive interior and exterior renovation. New windows,
light fixtures and attractive awnings have greatly improved the appearance of this building and
the block itself. The finished project is a wonderful addition to the Mainstreat streetscape.
Award recipients will receive a plaque and a $50 gift certificate for Glenrose Floral.
