Proclamation - Hopkins Womens Club~ ~6 ~ ~~~
C~G~~EJ~~, In 1908 the Woman of Hopkins formed a group to improve the image of the
Village of Hopkins. They named the group "The Woman's' Improvement League". The
club dues were 25 cents; and
C~~'~J~~, The Women's Improvement League helped create a new park at 11 "f' and
Excelsior and they established a library with over 800 books that were donated; and
C~~~~~~, In 1915 the League had 30 members and joined the National Federation of
Women's Clubs. In 1917 they organized the Hopkins Branch of the Red Cross; and
C~G~%EJ~~, They planted flower beds, donated trees, had rummage sales, made
handmade items and donated to those in need. They also raised funds to build a ladies
restroom at the fair grounds, sewed for TB patients at Glen Lake Sanitarium, bought 51
cemetery plats on Washington Ave for the poor; and
C~~:EJ~,P~.d, In 1947 the name of the club was changed to The Woman's Club of Hopkins.
They celebrated their 50 year anniversary in 1958 at the Red Owl Auditorium; and
~~~:E~~P,a.~, In 1974 the Women's Club organized a drive of some 3,300 from 11
organizations to support a park at 9th and lOtt', South of Main Street in which the Council
approved the park; and
C~~:E~~,P~, Each year the Women's Club collects pennies at each monthly meeting which
is part of a $1,000 dollar scholarship that is given to a senior girl graduating from Hopkins
High School. The Hopkins Women's Club continues to be of service to the Hopkins Family
Resource Center and many other charitable organizations.
