CR 2000-65 Approve Mainstreet Signal Design & Authorize Bids . . ,e CITY OF ~ HOPKINS c March 30,2000 Council Report: 2000-65 Approve Mainstreet Signal Design and Authorize Bids Proposed Action. Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: "Move that Council approve Mainstreet. /17th Avenue intersection signal design and authorize bids". . Overview. There is a history of a much higher accident and near-miss incident rate at this intersection when compared to other Mainstreet intersections. Many of the accidents are attributed to vehicle operator difficulty in seeing the current traffic signal faces. In December, 1999 City Council authorized design of a traffic signal upgrade. The City's consultant has completed final design and staff now requests approval to advertise for bids. Primary Issues to Consider Project cost/funding: The engineers estimate of construction cost is $84,600. The estimate of total project cost is $95,600. The 2000-2004 CIP estimated the project cost at $75,000. The project will be funded from the City's Municipal State Aid fund. · Signal system design The signal design includes several decorative design components. The signal poles will be green painted, fluted metal poles with a street light design that is unique to Mainstreet. The street light fixture will also be the Mainstreet green color - the attached photograph shows a blue fixture. Intersection illumination will remain at current levels.
