Memo-Vision/Mission-Next steps
. Administrative Services-
Office of the City Manager
Memorandum
To: Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council
From: Steven C. Mielke, Hopkins City Manage~
Date: November 22,2000
Subject: Vision / Mission - Next Steps
Mission Statement
The Draft Mission Statement has been reviewed by a variety of groups. The questions
are; Are we ready to adopt the statement? If not, what additional actions/ discussions
are necessary? Once adopted, how will the statement be implemented?
As City Manager, I am comfortable with the statement in its current state. [ would
. recommend that it be adopted and we start integrating the statement into all facets of
our communications. Additionally, I will be challenging Departments to demonstrate
how they will integrate the meaning of the statement into the fabric of their programs
and services.
Vision Statement
The Vision statement has also been shared with a wide variety of groups and
individuals. The statement may need amending prior to its adopNon, especially in the
supporting statements. I recommend the council discuss the statement and amend it to
the satisfaction of the council, then adopt. As with the Mission statement, the Vision
statement needs to be communicated both internally and, perhaps more importantly,
outside the organization. Implementation steps should focus on a couple of key points.
First, what actions can/should are priorities for the City, and second, what actions can
the community take to playa role in fulfilling the vision.
I would recommend that the council and staff focus on the action steps during the first
quarter of 2001 with the goal of identifying those steps that the City will take during the
next 1-3 years. This discussion should include dialogues with the various boards and
commissions, staff, and input from the community. The second quarter should be a
time of planning and budgeting for those actions the City commits itself to.
Other groups and organizations should foster the community-based actions through
dialogues. The City has a list of potential players from previous discussions that could
be used to share the Vision Statement and potential actions. A strategy for motivating
. action should be developed during the next six months to start the process and to
continue the dialogue into the future.
