Detailed background
• Are City funds available for this purchase?
The total bid of $52,726.34 falls within those dollars allocated in the City ofHopkins
Capital Improvement Plan.
• Is the product to be supplied by Playfield International a quality product?
The original carpet that staff is proposing to replace was a product of Playfield
International, Inc. That carpet was purchased used in 1990 after three years of use by
the Minnesota Strykers, a professional indoor soccer team. The city has since used
this carpeting for eight additional indoor seasons. The old carpeting exhibited
excellent wear and playability characteristics. The cities of Apple Valley and Blaine
have also purchased this product and each now have three seasons of use on their
indoor athletic carpeting with good reports on use and play characteristics.
• Is action necessary at this time?
Council action at this meeting is necessary in order to have the carpeting delivered
by March 1, 1998. Installation of the new carpet is to be completed by March 10 in
time for the indoor soccer league to begin play on March 11 Staff anticipates
beginning league play with the new carpet, which is safer and exhibits better play
characteristics than the old carpet.
