Memo- Hopkins Jaycees Skatepark ProposalMemorandum
TO: City Council Members
FROM: t Ray Vogtman, Park Board Staff Liaison
DATE: April 17, 1998
SUBJECT: Hopkins Jaycees Skatepark Proposal
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
Representatives of the Hopkins Jaycees recently approached City staff with a proposal
for funding of a skate park. Subsequent discussion with Julie Howard, president of the
Hopkins Jaycees, confirmed this proposal. The Hopkins Jaycees are willing to fund up
to $125,000.00 for a skatepark and $2,000.00 for a feasibility study and/or design plan.
Staff has been busy gathering information on skate parks in preparation for a special
park board meeting scheduled for April 20, 1998 at 6:30 p.m.
The park board will meet with Julie Howard and review the information staff has
compiled. This proposal comes at the same time that Hopkins- Minnetonka Recreation
Department is meeting with several other cities to consider portable skate park
proposals. These skate parks are designed to be brought to a city for one -month
rentals. Because of these previous discussions a considerable amount of information
is becoming available on skate parks. The park board will be asked to consider board
action on the Hopkins Jaycees proposal. Possible board action may be to recommend
to City Council that a committee be formed to choose a site, design and implement
plans for a skate park within the City of Hopkins. If this park board action is forth
coming, city staff will be available to help answer questions and lead discussion on the
Hopkins Jaycees proposal at the April 21 City Council meeting.
