Proclamation Recognizing March as MS Awareness Month City Council Report 2024-034 To: Council Members Mike Mornson, City Manager From: Patrick Hanlon, Mayor Date: March 19, 2024 Subject: Proclamation Recognizing March as MS Awareness Month _____________________________________________________________________ RECOMMENDED ACTION MOTION TO Adopt a Proclamation Recognizing March as MS Awareness Month. OVERVIEW Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness Month in Minnesota, like in many other places, serves to raise awareness about this chronic neurological condition and support those affected by it. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease in which the immune system attacks the protective covering of nerves, leading to communication problems between the brain and the rest of the body. Symptoms can vary widely and may include fatigue, difficulty walking, numbness or weakness in limbs, vision problems, and more. MS Awareness Month aims to foster greater understanding, support, and solidarity for individuals and families impacted by this complex condition. A proclamation will be provided at the meeting. SUPPORTING INFORMATION City Council A Proclamation Recognizing MS Awareness Month WHEREAS, the City of Hopkins, Minnesota, values the health and well -being of its residents and recognizes the importance of raising awareness about multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic and often disabling neurological condition affecting individuals worldwide; and WHEREAS, MS Awareness Month is observed annually in March, providing an opportunity for our community to come together to educate, support, and advocate for those affected by MS; and WHEREAS, it is crucial to foster understanding and compassion for individuals living with MS, as well as to acknowledge the dedication of caregivers, medical professionals, and researchers working towards advancements in treatment and finding a cure; and WHEREAS, by joining the global effort to increase awareness about multiple sclerosis, we contribute to the creation of a more inclusive and supportive community for those facing the challenges of this condition. FURTHERMORE, by recognizing and celebrating MS Awareness Month, we encourage all residents to participate in events, activities, and initiatives that promote understanding, support, and awareness of multiple sclerosis within our community. NOW THEREFORE, I, Patrick Hanlon, Mayor of the City of Hopkins in the State of Minnesota, along with my fellow Council Members, recognize, adopt, and proclaim this Proclamation and urge all to observe MS Awareness Month in Hopkins, Minnesota.
