Memo Student/Community Coffeehouse Project e To: Hopkins City Council From: Sharon MacDonald and the Coffeehouse Committee Date: May 2, 1995 Re: Student/Community Coffeehouse Project History In the Fall of 1994, the Hopkins Chemical Health Commission sponsored a community forum featuring students from Hopkins High School speaking about their experiences in the school and in the community related to chemical use. Their position included a concern that there were very few places for youth to congregate that were chemical free and provided a space for being together socially. They believe that many youth get into the chemical use scene due to boredom and lack of alternatives. In attendance were more than 200 community adults representing the City Council the e Chemcal Health Commission, area businesses, the faith community, parents, and concerned citizens. Following the forum, a smaller group of interested adults joined with the youth in forming a committee to become part of the solution to the lack of places for sober fun in the Hopkins-Minnetonka area. Several ideas were discussed including a recreation facility, a entertainment club, and a coffeehouse. The majority of students believed the most viable alternative at this point was to open a student run coffeehouse. Planning has continued throughout the 1994-95 school year. How You Can Help Currently the committee is in the process of selecting a location for the coffeehouse, securing funding, organizational planning, community education and partnership, looking at management, and determining next steps. Significant exploration has been done regarding the use of the railroad depot at the corner of Hwy 169 and Excelsior Blvd. Students and adults are now interested in disucssing the project with the HopkinsCity Council in an effort to further develop that partnership as we move forward. Attached you will find the Sun Sailor article describing the project's early beginnings. We look forward to further dialogue with the Council. e :/lei::" ->>0 "E~~ :::-.0(1)0 C'Q ]~ ~ ~ ~ ~ (l) ~ ~ ~ -o-<S ';a i Q. :;;s g ..se cJ~s:::".J-;::~~ . The Royal Page Hopkins High School Minnetonka. Minnesota . Volume XIII, Issue 5 March 21. 1995 " - _. .- Coffeehouse perks up students by Paige Abramson For teens, fmding fun things to do and places to go is oot an easy task. . Finding places and activities where there is no drinking is even more difficult. But there soon may be a solution to this problem A group of _HHS students met with Hopkins City Officials and members of the r Hopkins Chemical Health Commission got together 00 Jan. 13 to discuss plans for building a facility for chemically free activities. The meeting was a result of comments made by students at a commu- r oity forum last September. The students said that the reason many of their peers drink and use drugs is because there is nothing else for them to do. The HHS students, who are referred to as the Y oulli Planning Commit- tee, suggested building a coffeehouse, a recreation center including a ropes course and climbing walls, a club for dancing and an outdoor center where people could hike and camp out. A main idea brought up at the meeting was that the students should have major input and be significantly involved with the project. The students at the initial meeting were PAC[ members, however anyone who is interested can get involved by contacting Mrs. Sharon McDonald in the Guidance Office. A second meeting was held on Feb. 10 at which time members of the community rejoined with students to discuss the three possible optioos: the coffeehouse, the club, and the recreation center. AB a result of the meeting, Matt Nelson (12) was elected as the student co-chair and a survey is being developed and will be distributed to students to gain feedback on the project. Meetings will continue to be held once a month as both students and aduts strive to make this vision a reality. "I couidn 't be IDJre optimistic; this is such an exceUent partnership between the community and its . kids," stated Mrs. McDonald. .
