Yes. Although the bids were higher than anticipated, they were very competitive. The higher costs were attributed to the project being relatively small, being bid late in the construction season, and the fact that the preliminary engineer's opinion of cost didn't include mobilization, a $4,500 item. o Construction Schedule The contractor will begin work within 10 days of notice to proceed (on or about September 15) and has 45 days to complete the project. e o Staff Recommendation Staff recommends award to Lindahl and Carlson. They have done satisfactory work for the city in the past. Also, Lindahl and Carlson and Fairfax Asphalt, Inc., the asphalt subcontractor, recently completed a very successful project in Brooklyn Center. . . . . PAUL WASECA August 21, 1995 File No: 158-003-20 Mr. Steve Stadler Public Works Director City of Hopkins 1010 1 st Street Hopkins, MN 55343-7573 RE: BOSTON GARDEN PARKING LOT Dear Mr. Stadler: Bids were received 0 August 17, 1995 for the parking lot constructions. Four Contractors submitted bids with the following results: LindaW and Carlson . . . . . . . . . . . Bituminous Consulting Hardrives . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Midwest Asphalt Corp. .............. .. $45,169.95 45,534.00 49,132.50 49,534.00 A bid tabulation is enclosed for your review. The engineer's estimate for this project was $27,217 .50. The major difference from the bids and the estimate were by the unit pricing for class 5, types 31 and 41 bituminous material and the installation of the light. The higher unit costs are attributable to the size and timing of the project. We anticipated an increased cost due to these factors, however we did not anticipate the significant increases. The Contractors appear to have found installation of the light to be far more involved that we anticipated. If the City decides to proceed with the project, we recommend an awarding to Lindahl and Carlson. Please contact us with any questions you may have regarding this project.
