AWARD OF SUBURBAN CHEVROLET FLAGPOLE TO THE
MAETZOLD FIELD IMPROVEMENT PROJECT 94-05
Proposed Action.
staff recommends adoption of the following motion: "Move to award the
flaqpole on the old Suburban Chevrolet site to the Maetzold Field
improvement project 94-05."
Overview.
In April of 1994, the president of the Hopkins Lions Club, Dr. William
Schumacher, submitted a letter to the Public Works Director. This
letter was submitted to indicate the Hopkins Lions support for a
memorial plaque and sponsorship of a flagpole for the new home of the
Hopkins Area Little League. At this time staff verbally requested
permission to relocate the flagpole from the old Suburban Chevrolet
site to Maetzold Field. A decision on the eventual use of this pole
was delayed pending planning for the redevelopment of the site on
Mainstreet. Redevelopment plans appear to be well enough defined at
this time to make a decision on the flagpole.
. Primary Issue to Consider
0 Should the flagpole be relocated to Maetzold Field?
0 How will this project be funded?
0 Is this relocation cost reasonable?
0 When will this project begin?

4IJ Analysis of Issues
o Should the flagpole be relocated to Maetzold Field?
A flagpole 1S a key component of Little League play and
operations. If this flagpole is not relocated, a new flagpole
will have to be purchased at far greater cost and will be much
less impressive. Present plans for redevelopment of the
Mainstreet site do not appear to include the flagpole. It can be
sal vaged successfully, and placed in a prominent location at
Maetzold Field for the enjoyment of the general public, under
sponsorship of a local charitable organization.
o How will this project be funded?
The Hopkins evening Lions Club has made a request for sponsorship
of this project. Quotes have been received from Top Line, Inc.
to relocate the pole at a cost of $1025.00 (April 1, 1994). This
cost will be paid by the Hopkins Lions Club.
o Is this relocation cost reasonable?
The flagpole, if purchased new, would be approximately $9,000.
The pole will be removed, transported to Maetzold Field, and
placed in a new cement footing. The cost quoted for labor and
4It materials is appropriate.
o When will this project begin?
The relocation can take place as soon as the frost has left the
ground. Hopkins Area Little League begins league play on April
15th. Staff hopes to have a flagpole on site in time for a city-
wide dedication ceremony to take place by early summer.

Dear Mr. Gustafson,
The Hopkins evening Lions Club respectively request the opportunity to place a
memorial plaque honoring Mr. Butsy Maetzold at the new Maetzold Park. It would
be our intention to outline his achievements as a citizen of Hopkins.
We are also interested in the possibility of sponsoring the placement of a flag
pole in the park.
4IJwe would defer the placement of the plaque and flagpole to the discreation of
the city staff and the Hopkins Park Board.
Thank you for your consideration reguarding this matter.
Sincerely, ~
~.
