Memo Discussion On Implementing Pavement Management CITY OF HOPKINS MEMORANDUM DATE: October 28, 1993 TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: Lee Gustafson, Public Works Director~ SUBJECT: Discussion qn Implementing Pavement Management Program This discussion has been scheduled with Council in order to give Council a good understanding of pavement management, 'and explain why it would be a good idea for the City .to have such a program. The discussion will also serve as a means for the Council to be introduced to Braun Intertec, the consultant staff would like to use to develop a pavement management program for the city. The final phase of this discussion will hopefully.. occur at. .the regular Council . meeting on Tuesday night, and that would be for the Council '~,... to authorize the. Mayor and City Manager to enter into a contract with Braun Intertec for developing a pavement management program for the City. Staff is intending to have Braun Intertec first give. .a presentation on the benefits of pavement management, and how it can save the City considerable money if properly used. Braun will then briefly go through their program and explain why so many ci ties are already. using it. Braun will then conclude their discussion by describing how they could assist us in managing our pavement. Attached for your . information on this issue is the Council report on pavement management that is scheduled for Council action . at the regular November 2nd Council meeting. Included within this report are the history of pavement management in Hopkins and the funding sources if a program is implemented. Also attached is a small booklet titled "The Hole Story" . This booklet will provide Council with a good background for the presentation by Braun Intertec. The booklet explains why roads fail, and why a management program can assist a ci tyin spending its road repair dollars in the most cost effective manner. .\ -~,,~.,. , ,~
