Memo- Applications Operations Board, Hopkins CenterMemorandum City Manager's Department To: Hopkins Mayor and City Council City Manager Steve Mielke From: Jim Parsons Date: July 10, 1997 Subject: Applications to Operations Board, Hopkins Center for the Arts The City has received 31 applications for the its 3 appointments to the volunteer Operations Board for the Hopkins Center for the Arts. The applications are summarized on the attached spreadsheet, and are themselves attached in full for your use. The applicants form an impressive, well - qualified and diverse group. One purpose of the July 15 work session is to select a certain number of applicants to invite to come for brief interviews with the Council on July 22. (Applicants Leslie Ackerberg, David Anderson, and Linda Flynn are not available for interviews that evening.) Staff would ask that Council members place each applicant into one of three categories: Interview, Possible Interview, or No Interview. This information will be helpful as the Council determines which applicants to invite for an interview. Key questions which the interviewees should address include: 1. Why are you interested in the Hopkins Center for the Arts? 2. What is the one main reason you should be appointed to the Operations Board? 3. Do you have 10 -20 hours per month to dedicate to the Operations Board? 4. What is your vision for the Hopkins Center for the Arts? Also attached is a form that Council members may use during the interview process to rank applicants. (The Council has stated that two of the appointees must be Hopkins residents; the third appointee may be a resident of another community.) cp v) a trrterested in other -union I auiiaaj I SaJ 1 agi(ew' Maybe 1 ON I seA I se) Maybe 1 oN 1 sat ,Arts Background Volunteer art educator in Minnetonka Public Schools; major in theater /acting. H ? !_ HOPKINS • 1 5 - 5 3 4 3 612 938.1622 Dear City Manager, I am writing to you to express my interest in becoming a board member of the new Hopkins Center for the Arts. I can best explain why I would like to serve on the Operations Board by briefly giving you an overview of my upbringing. I had the honor of having educators as parents. My passion for education and and interest in investing in a community was due to the well- rounded upbringing they afforded me. My father, Hubert Anderson, was an English teacher and debate coach at Eisenhower High School for 30 years. Both my parents grew up in small, rural towns during the depression era and understood the importance of contributing what you could to your neighbors. That compassion has been passed along to their daughters and grandchildren. I take great pride, however corny, in growing up and choosing to continue to live in Hopkins. The quality of living here Is a direct result of its residents caring about what takes place in their city. We have a rich history, including the original trolley car system, big industry and one of the oldest festivals in the state. Our schools have won state and national awards, our government officials, policemen and firemen excel in their positions and our residents are some of the kindest I've known. We're one of the few cities with its own farmer's market, city park and genuine irony of purpose (tearing down a theater to build a car dealership and tearing down a car dealership to build a theater!). Who wouldn't want to be a part of the history and traditions of Hopkins? It is not only my love of arts and education which compels me to this position on your Operations Board but the desire to invest my time, experience and resources back into this community. If I am appointed to the Operations Board, I am sure the experience will be as diverse as Hopkins' residents are. 2 4 . 1 ..r A F 1_ 1 .. R 0 A 0 HOPKINS ) 5 5 3 4 3 612.938.1622 My background in the arts is a direct result of the multitude of cultural experiences I was exposed to as a child. My parents encouraged our creative expressions and introduced us to the many arts in the Twin Cities, such as plays at the Guthrie. During my college years, I did volunteer work at the Guthrie (in part to be able to see plays for free!). What I took away from these experiences was a love of the visual and performing arts, as well as a love of language and communications. I am a trained art teacher and designer with an extensive background in business and facilities (new construction) management. I have experience working in galleries, advertising /design agencies, post- secondary art schools and most aspects of commercial design and fine arts. I have been involved in some aspect of "the arts" my entire life and cannot imagine my life without those experiences. My team building and networking skills, I believe, would contribute greatly to the initial and future success of HCA. I enjoy working with a variety of individuals and groups and have the operations and organizational skills to get things done. For the past five years, I have contributed my talents to the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc., Minnesota Chapter as a designer and consultant. I am knowledgeable of profit and non- profit organizations as well as the operation of programs in the arts. It would be advisable for the HCA Board to look into the operations of the Edina Art Center and Minnetonka Center for the Arts. Although they are slightly different than what is planned for the Hopkins Center for the Arts, they are good examples of soliciting volunteers, creating arts programs and working with the communities around them. There are many challenges ahead for the Hopkins Center for the Arts. It would be my honor and privilege to be a part of the team that will ensure its successful future. Thank you for considering me as a member of the HCA Operations Board. Sincerely, Becky R. Anderson Proven organizational and leadership ability. Expertise in business operations and development. Creative writer and designer with Macintosh and PC experience. Working knowledge of profit and non - profit organizations. Consistent communications, media and public relations skills. Successful in motivating diverse individuals and teams. I was very intrigued with the opportunities to volunteer for this important board. I am writing in the hope that we can talk to further discuss these opportunities. I have been a long time supporter and promoter of the arts. My experience with the arts covers a wide range of activities including acting in a few small theater productions, performing in a show choir and a concert choir, assisting backstage at various theater and choral productions, writing theater and art reviews, and attendance at a variety of arts functions' throughout the nation. My enthusiasm for the arts runs the gamut. This - variety includes theater, from the minimal to the most elaborate productions; dance, from classical ballet to modern; art, from ancient pieces to the most abstract modern works at galleries and museums; and music, from classical to modern As you will see by my enclosed resume I have been a member of the Fraternity Purchasing Association Board of Directors for the past seven years and have been involved with a variety of report, newsletter, and minutes evaluation. During my tenure with the Fraternity Purchasing Association Board of Directors and as treasurer of Zeta Psi fraternity I have participated in the creation and review of budgets and carried out the missions of these organizations, observing their bylaws, rules and regulations in accordance to state and federal laws. My experience in Zeta Psi fraternity and the Fraternity Purchasing Association Board of Directors has helped my presentation and negotiation skills which I use, often on a daily basis, in my dealings with clients as a Technical Service Representative at Dayton Hudson. I would also like you to notice that while working full time with Hudson, I have been attending graduate school full time (maintaining a 3.89 GPA) in order to develop my analytical and critical skills. I desire to serve on the Operations Board for the Hopkins Center for the Arts because J believe it will afford me the opportunity to become more involved with the community of Hopkins,' enriching both the citizens' and my experiences and interests with the arts, as well as gain me more experience with the operations side of the arts. I would like to meet with you to discuss how my education and experience would be consistent with your needs. Please contact me at my home, (612) 935 -1602. Sincerely, Derek N. To recap my application: 1. I have a lifelong interest in the arts which manifest itself in a successful career in film and video production. 2. I spent seven years in New York City, immersed in the arts as a student at New York University and incubating my career in media production. 3. I helped move KTCA from an educational television station to a cultural resource for the Twin Cities as Production Manager for arts programming from 1978 to 1980. 4. I am currently on the Board of Trustees for Bet Shalom Synagogue in Hopkins. 5. My daughters (3) are active in Hopkins Schools and the Hopkins Dance Center. 6. I believe Hopkins Arts Center can be an extremely important addition to Hopkins and the cultural scene of the West Suburban Metro area. An Arts Center serves both performer/ performance groups as well as audiences. To do so it needs a very wide perspective on customer service, life in general and the arts. I believe I can help bring that perspective to the board. City Manager City of Hopkins 1010 First Street South Hopkins, MN 55343 MARCiA MAR CU S RE: Board Member, Operations Board, Hopkins Center for the Arts July 9, 1997 Dear City Manager; I would like to take this opportunity to briefly introduce myself to you. My name is Marcia Marcus. I have lived in the Twin Cities for twenty years, by way of New York and Los Angeles. And, I have supported the idea of an arts center in Hopkins from its inception. For most of my professional life I have been successfully involved in selling to the public. - I believe the position of Board Member, Operations Board, Hopkins Center for the Arts, will enable me to pass on what I have learned, to aid in fundraising, promotions and marketing. After college, as a research assistant for the Center for Disease Control, I helped establish a clinic at Los Angeles' poorest hospital, LA -USG Medical Center. My duties included designing research forms, co- authoring the mission statement, establishing the infrastructure, and educating the public as to our services. From there I worked for many years in retail, until 1988 when I became Vice President of Sales/Marketing for Bagdasarian Productions, Inc., more widely known as "Alvin and the Chipmunks ". Marketing and licensing The Chipmunks was a challenge. When I began they a handful of products available at retail, when I left they had over one hundred. Working in Entertainment Marketing for so many years I understand how difficult it is to build the right image for longevity. For the last four years I have been a partner in an entrepreneurial product development company. It is very exciting to start with an idea and create the reality, but it is not without obstacles. Helping the Center through this process would be very gratifying. On a personal note, I live just south of Ridgedale, my Post Office is Hopkins. This is my city. My husband and our thirteen year old sor frequent the tropical fish store, we shop there, and now we can go to the movies there. Hopkins is a wonderful town. I have always believed it should and could be revitalized. This Center has the potential to take the City of Hopkins to the next level. I would be privileged to a small part of that journey. Though a writer by trade, I started out as an English professor specializing in drama. After graduating from the U of M in 1965, I won a graduate fellowship at the State University of New York at Buffalo and earned a doctorate; my dissertation was on the plays of Harold Painter. I taught briefly at the University of Delaware, then went on to a series of writing/editing jobs at Reader's Digest, CBS Television, and the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Downsized in 1994, I returned to the Twin Cities and am currently the Business Writer at Fairview- University Medical Center. Over that same 32 -year span, I continued to teach part-tine, mainly to adult students in extension or lifelong - learning programs. Some of my courses were in literature and writing, but for nearly 20 years I taught humanities courses combining literature with the other arts -- painting, sculpture, dance, film, music, architecture, etc. I also presented the course to general audiences as a 15 -week lecture series, which proved so popular that I was invited back twice to do other series. A resident of New York City for most of that time, I was a frequent patron of theaters, museums, and galleries. I also wrote a handful of plays and published a young -adult novel and a considerable body of children's literature. In 1995 I returned to school and earned a Master's in education, broadening my teaching experience to include high - and junior- high- schoolers as well as adults. During that same year, by virtue of a National Endowment for the Arts grant, was Education Director for the Westchester Philharmonic; besides writing program notes for the orchestra, I developed an interdisciplinary curriculum for grades 3 to 5, which was used in more than 60 schools. My interest in the drama remains strong. Since arriving here 19 months ago 1 have published a study guide on Shakespeare, taught several plays at the University of St. Thomas, and seen most of the Guthrie's fall season. My wife Carol and I are also t vid movie fans, usually seeing at least one film a week, and we enjoy musical concerts of all kinds. As a final item, for about five years at CBS Television, my job was evaluate the results of viewer tests for new TV series. I would read viewers' comments and predict the show's probable fortunes if aired on prime time. The work required a keen sensitivity to the tastes and attitudes of JUL -09 -1997 14 05 Why do you wish to serve on the Operations Board for the HCA? r . 1J4 the public -- qualities which would, I believe, benefit the community if I were a Board member. Though living in Hopkins for less than a year, we are quite fond of the city and eager to participate in its activities. We do quite a lot of volunteer work and find it highly rewarding_ While in New York, for example, I was a tour guide: at the American Museum of Natural History for many years, and since last year Carol and I have worked for the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association, the National Diabetes Foundation, a Minneapolis synagogue, and the. City of Minnetonka I would like to devote my energies to the fine arts as well, a field in which I've been teaching and learning for over three decades. As newcomers, we're also interested in meeting people with similar interests and backgrounds, and this would be a perfect opportunity to do so. Thank you for your consideration. I hope you will see from my application that I have a genuine love for the arts. I attribute much of who I am, and believe many of the decisions I have made through out my life directly relate to the fabulous opportunities I have been fortunate enough to experience. Growing up in Hopkins and attending the Hopkins schools, I have fond memories of my musical training, art classes, Challenge courses in Art History, and dance lessons at Hopkins Dance. I believe more people need to have the opportunity to experience and appreciate these things. I will be beginning my Masters studies in Arts Administration at MCAD this fall, and believe volunteering my time on this board would complement my educational training. I look forward to the opportunity to speak with you further. As an architect, I have had a continuous relationship with the arts. I believe that people benefit in there lives because of the whole range of arts. Many times that exposure may not be the traditional arts forms. Therefore people may not understand just how the arts shape their viewpoint in life. Arts organizations should involve as wide a range of people as possible and should use traditional as well as nontraditional approaches as possible. HCA has the opportunity to do that I would very much like to be part of that process. I believe that I have a strong background in leadership within the community and would like to be able to help in the development of policies and programs which can bring as many people as possible to exposure in arts programs of all kinds. This diversity is something that we view as important. PHILOSOPHY OF FIRM Our firm's main purpose is to produce for our clients a high level of design quality combined with careful attention to their budgets 'and intended completion dates. We also believe in designing for our clients a facility that is efficient to operate ant that fits agreeably into its neighborhood. To achieve this, we work directly with the client in all phases of a project. These phases can include planning, research and programming, site selection and development, architectural and interior design, working drawings, contract preparation, bid evaluation, and construction contract administration. Important to our design process is the participation of the clients; only that way will the final building reflect their real needs. A building can only be as good as the client. Our past work has given us a broad range of experience in many areas of building. We will utilize this by approaching each project in close partnership with our client , consultants, and contractors, since our aim is to find solutions that are innovative, yet buildable on a reasonable budget and timetable.
