HOPKINS PLAZA /HOPKINS HOME CENTER
STORM SEWER
Council Report No. 97 -152
Analysis
Project description
The consultant proposes installing an 18 -inch storm sewer pipe
between the Hopkins Home Center site and the Hopkins Plaza
Apartment complex. Points of connection will be an existing
18 -inch storm sewer stub in 8th Avenue South near the southwest
corner of the Home Center and a catch basin /manhole at the
southeast corner of the Home Center in a vacated alley. The
engineer proposes partial open trenching for laying of pipe but
recommends pipe jacking over a minimum 135 feet of the project.
Jacking or directional boring is called for to protect adjacent
building basement walls and to reduce the impact on landscaping
(trees, sidewalks, parking lot) and buried electrical cable.
The catch basin /manhole structure in the alley R.O.W. near the
southeast corner of the Home Center will continue to take on
drainage from a combination roof rain leader and catch basin to
the north, a storm force main from the Hopkins Plaza
underground garage to the southeast, and an existing 18 -inch
storm sewer that drains 7th Avenue South as well as an alley
between 6th /7th Avenues South.
Construction is projected to begin by October and be completed
by November 1. All attempts will be made to keep traffic
disruptions on 8th Avenue to a minimum.
Costs
The consultant has estimated construction costs to total
$49,100. TIF revenues are the anticipated funding source for
this project.
