Proposed Action
Overview
Primary Issues to Consider
Steven C. Mielke
City Manager
TRAFFIC CONSULTANT, CO RD 73 AND 5 TASK FORCE
Council Report 98 -099
Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: Move to approve a budget of up to $8.000
from the general fund contingency or from municipal state aid. for purposes of hiring a
consultant to assist the County Roads 73 and 5 task force.
Adoption of this motion will result in the potential of a consultant being hired to assist the Co Rd
73 and 5 task force as it continues its work in advising the City Council on potential changes to
the roadways and intersections in the vicinity of 73 and 5.
In October of 1997, the City Council directed the formation of a task force to review and advise
the City Council on matters relative to pedestrian, vehicular, and bicycle movements through
and around the intersection of County Roads 73 and 5. The task force has met twice and has
made good progress toward its charge.
The committee has reached a point in its discussions where it is ready to consider alternative .
design options, and has indicated a desire to get professional assistance. They are interested
in hiring a consultant who is knowledgeable about transportation planning, but carries a
philosophy of considering neighborhood impacts in conjunction with transportation needs. Staff
is recommending adoption of this motion, since it will further the efforts of the task force, and
that the type of consultant being proposed is different from previous studies conducted in the
past.
What will be the source of funds?
Staff is recommending either a contingency expenditure from the general fund or the
municipal state aid fund.
How will a consultant be selected?
It is proposed that the task force select a consultant. The Mayor and staff conducted an
initial interview of one consultant in January, and the task force will be meeting with that
consultant on July 1 to consider the proposal.
