OVERVIEW The new election legislation approved in 2023 and added to the City Charter in 2025 allows Hopkins to adopt a resolution about counting write-in votes for city offices. It requires a write-in candidate to file a written request for their votes to be individually tallied. This request must be filed with the City Clerk no later than the 7th day before the General Election. SUPPORTING INFORMATION • Draft Resolution 2025-057 Administration CITY OF HOPKINS HENNEPIN COUNTY, MINNESOTA RESOLUTION 2025-057 RESOLUTION FOR COUNTING WRITE-IN VOTES FOR LOCAL ELECTIVE OFFICE WHEREAS, Minnesota Statute 204B.09, subdivision 3 allows for the governing body of a statutory or home rule charter city to adopt a resolution governing the counting of write-in votes for local elective office. WHEREAS, the current write-in vote counting process is overly time consuming and unnecessary. Counting only registered write-in candidates aligns the write-in recording process with Federal, State and County offices. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Hopkins hereby requires candidates for city office to file a written request with the chief election official no later than the seventh day before the city election if the candidate wants to have the candidate’s write-in votes individually recorded.
