Memo Hopkins Activity Center Work SessionMEMORANDUM
TO: Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council
THROUGH: Steven C. Mielke, City Manager
FROM: Dave Johnson, Director of Recreation Services
DATE: April 4, 1996
SUBJECT: Hopkins Activity Center Work Session Discussion
The Hopkins Activity Center staff will be present at the April 9, 1996 Work Session
to discuss with the City Council issues and concerns related to the facility's operation.
In 1995, 41,476 people participated in activities sponsored by, or facilitated at, the
Hopkins Activity Center (See attachment).
As a result of expanded use of the facility, staff has requested a Work Session
discussion to determine the Council's desire for future use of the facility. Issues to
be addressed include:
• A review of current programs offered by the Hopkins Activity Center staff
including senior and non - senior related programs.
• A review of staffing and equipment issues and concerns in preparation of the
1997 operating budget.
• Use /rental of the facility for non senior related requests.
• Revenue expectations of the Council. Should the facility work towards being
self sustaining?
• Capital replacement issues related to maintenance of the facility.
• Proposed ownership changes to the Renaissance property. How does this
affect the operation and maintenance of the Hopkins Activity Center?
Increase requests for use of public facilities, combined with continued growth in the
senior population result in the Hopkins Activity Center being a valuable City facility.
Staff is seeking direction from the City Council on the above - mentioned issues in
determining future management practices for the Hopkins Activity Center.
