Subject:
City Hall Site Improvements - Handicap accessible sidewalk from 1st Street South
At the March 28 Council worksession staff and George Watson, Landscape Architect, presented
design plans for the 2006 City Hall site improvements project. Following the presentation, City
Council members requested that staff look into the possibility of adding a handicap-accessible
.idewalk from the street level to the City Hall front entrance.
Installing a new walk on the west side of the current front steps isn't feasible as the elevation drop is
more severe and a switchback ramp configuration would be very expensive and completely fill-in the
landscaped area west of the steps. However, it is possible to add a sidewalk on the east side of the
front entrance area that could be installed at-grade and that wouldn't exceed the maximum 5% slope
allowed by ADA standards. This walk is depicted on the attached photographs. The estimated cost
is $3,500. This cost would include adding a light bollard along the walk.
Staff is seeking direction on whether or not to add this sidewalk to the project scope.
