Subject:
Proposed New Building Maintenance Position
Backqround: I presented a need for additional full-time facility maintenance staff at an August 2004
pre-budget presentation and at the November 30, 2004 Council Worksession, The Nov 30
worksession memo is attached, Following discussion, City Council agreed by consensus at the
November 30 work session to fund the position starting in June 2005 and to review the position again
prior to June,
Current: I request approval to fill one new facility maintenance technician position, I refer City
Council to the attached November 30 work session memo as the justification and work description for
additional dedicated facility maintenance staff hasn't changed from what was stated in this memo,
The completion, start-up and occupation of the new city facilities haven't provided any evidence that
there is any less need for additional maintenance staff, We've already had to change the belts once
on the new rooftop HVAC units at the Police Station, The need to have adequate staff to begin a
systematic preventative maintenance program is still very apparent.
I have attached the proposed job description for a building services technician position, The
proposed position would be HMEA Grade 4, wage range is $16,82/hr - $22,68/hr for steps A - F,
The estimated labor time and cost allocation for the proposed new position would be as follows:
City Hall: 40%
Hopkins Center for the Arts: 15%
Public Works Building: 20%
Activity Center: 10%
Fire Department: 10%
Depot Coffee House: 5%
If approved, we would post the new position internally the first week of May, If filled by an internal
employee, he/she would start as soon as possible depending on the needs of the losing department.
If there are no qualified internal candidates, the position will be advertised and, hopefully, filled by
June 30,
