Memo- Downtown Discussion• • • MEMORANDUM TO: Honorable Mayor and Hopkins City Council Members FROM: Kersten Elverum, Director of Planning & Development DATE: June 18, 2008 SUBJECT: Downtown Discussion ■ Vacancies on Mainstreet — Perception vs. Reality • Exploring New Initiatives Including: "What's Missing" survey Market Research Design Assistance Green Incentives Banners — Baskets — etc. Events • Business Recruitment What is a priority? What are current opportunities? What is our approach? Planning & Economic Development A discussion has been scheduled for the June 24, 2008, work session to address a variety of issues related to the downtown. The agenda will include (but is not limited to) the following: Attached is a packet of information put together for Holy Land. It was the first attempt at a recruitment package and will be built on for future use. I look forward to the discussion. • • • Hopkins Area Demographics Within a 10 -mile radius: 783,493 Employees 884,125 Residents 50% earn over $60,000 per year This area includes Edina, Minnetonka, St. Louis Park, Plymouth and Eden Prairie • • Currently Hopkins has: In a 2007 Hopkins citizen survey: 32% citied too few dining options 95% rated quality of life as good or excellent 11 Fast Food Chain Restaurants 6 "Upscale" Fast Food Restaurants 5 Restaurant/Bars 5 Chinese Restaurants 4 "American Food" Family Restaurants 1 Upscale Restaurant Most of these restaurants are located on Mainstreet, also known as Downtown Hopkins. Mainstreet is a walkable, vibrant city center with an untapped market for unique, ethnic restaurants.
