MEMORANDUM
To: Zoning and Planning Commission

Subject: Skateboards
The City Council has referred the skateboard ramp issue back
to the Commission. The Council indicated that if a
skateboard ramp is allowed to be constructed and hence
creating a neighborhood disturbance, it would be wise to
eliminate the ramp before it became a nuisance rather than
after. Therefore, an ordinance should be written to
prohibit or place skateboard ramps in restricted areas.
The staff has considered requiring a skateboard ramp to
require a Conditional Use Permit, however, the conditions
placed on the ramps would involve subjective criteria that
would revolve around whether the ramp is a nuisance.
Minneapolis has prohibited skateboard ramps within the City
through their Housing Code. I have talked to Minneapolis
and they are sending a copy of their ordinance. Hopefully I
will have this by the Zoning and Planning meeting.
Proposed language is being considered and should be ready by
the time of the meeting.
The Council was also concerned about skateboarding within
the downtown area. The Commission might want to consider an
ordinance prohibiting skateboards within the downtown.
