CITY OF HOPKINS

The following are examples of surrounding communities sign ordinances dealing with
signs in windows. The percentage of signage in windows ranges from 20% to 40 %. It
should be noted that Anoka does not allow any signs in their windows. What we are
proposing is limiting the signs to a percentage of the window area plus limiting
the size of each sign.
COTTAGE GROVE: Window signage shall not exceed one -third of the
total area of the window in which they are displayed.
BURNSVILLE: Window signage shall not exceed 25% of the total area
of the window in which they are displayed. Lettering used in window
signage exceeding three and one -half inches in height shall be debited
against the total signage permitted.
COLUMBIA HEIGHTS - Prohibited signs.
Any window sign or signs which exceed twenty -five percent of the total
area of the window on or in which it is displayed. Exempt Signs -
window signage which does not exceed 25% of the total area of the
window on or in which it is displayed.
COON RAPIDS: Window Signs - Temporary' window signs shall only be
permitted in a commercial district provided that they do not occupy
over 40 percent of the window area on any building frontage.
NORTH ST. PAUL: Signs shall be permitted in a window or in a display
of merchandise when incorporated with such a display. There shall be
no limit to the number of such signs, provided, however, that the total
area of all window signs shall not exceed twenty percent of the window
glass area, to be calculated separately for each side of the building.
An additional 10 percent of the window area may be used on a temporary
basis to advertise non - profit activities.
ANOKA: - No sign shall be permitted to obstruct any windows, doors,
fire escape, stairway or opening intended to provide required light,
air, ingress or egress for any building or structure.
Temporary- window signs shall be permitted. There shall be no limit
to the number of such signs, provided, however, that the total area
of all window signs shall not exceed percent of the window glass
area, to be calculated separately for each side of the building and
provided no sign shall exceed square feet nor shall 2 or more
smaller signs be so arranged and integrated to cause a sign size
greater than _ square feet.

We did not measure the smaller lettering on the windows which would increase the
total amount of percentage of signage.

At the last meeting the Commission asked the staff to look at how Excelsior and
Wayzata handle signs in Windows.
Excelsior adds the window signs to the total square footage o
all allowed signage.
Wayzata on the other hand allows up to 50% of window space to be
used for signage.
