Item 84-139 Island Construction 10 Ave NJune 13, 1984
To: Mr. Craig, City Manager
From: Gordon Anderson
Re: Islands on 10th Avenue North - 1983 Construction
The City Council at the meeting of June 5 asked that a review be made
of the islands constructed on 10th Avenue North as a part of the parking lot
improvement in 1983. Eight islands or protrusions into 10th Avenue were con-
structed, two on the west side and six on the east side. (See numbered sketch
#1).
The two islands on the west, #1 & 2, were constructed as designed by
Mr. Benshoof, protruding 7 feet and 3 feet respectively. (The Benshoof plan
dimensions were scaled distances). The two islands on the east side of 10th
Avenue, #'s 3 & 4 were also constructed as designed, 112 feet and 13 feet re-
spectively.
The remaining islands #'s 5 -8 were designed to have a total protrusion
beyond the original curb of 20 feet. A normal large car extends out about 17
feet when parked perpendicular to the curb. Before these four islands were
constructed, we looked at the length of these islands, the length of cars
parked along them, the turning length needed for parked cars and the turning
radius needed for cars going in and out of the drive areas. No's 5 -7 were cut
back from 20 feet to 14 feet before construction. (See attached sketch #2).
At this length the island somewhat protects the parked vehicles while allowing
a normal 15' turning radius when exiting from the parking areas east.
Island # 8 was cut back to 14 feet also to match the three islands to
the south and also to allow the turning area needed for semi -truck movement
in and out of the Super Valu entrance on the west side. At 14 feet, this area
is quite restricted but trucks are able to negotiate the turns necessary.
