Memo- Joint Meeting with Park Board
• Public Works Department Memorandum To: Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Council Park Board Members From: Steven J. Stadler, Public Works Director Copy: Rick Getschow, City Manager Date: May 21, 2010 Subject: Joint Meeting with Park Board Purpose • To update the City Council on the activities of the Park Board Tobacco -Free Parks Policy A group of Hopkins North Junior High students led by Nikki Slatkin, Americorp Promise Fellow and Karissa Wentzel, Tobacco -Free Youth Recreation gave a presentation to the Park Board at its May 17 meeting - see attached copy of PowerPoint slides. Following a brief question/answer and discussion time, the Park Board requested that staff develop proposed policy language, including any areas of concern/consideration not already discussed, which would prohibit tobacco use in all city parks. The Park Board intends to discuss the proposed new policy and its recommended implementation at the June 21 meeting. Shady Oak Beach Play Equipment project The play equipment selection process continues with three finalists showing their proposed equipment at a May 24 open house - children (and parents) in attendance will have the opportunity to mark their preferred design. Shortly thereafter, the Jt Minnetonka -Hopkins Park Board & staff selection committee will chose a winning proposal. Site preparation will be done this fall with equipment installation next spring. 0 • Staff will review the three finalists proposals and the types of equipment being considered for the 2-5 year old play area and the 5-12 year old play area. 2011-2015 Capital Improvement Plan The Park Board has proposed to add a new CIP project that would provide periodic funding for miscellaneous improvements in the parks. Items such as replacing play area edging, picnic shelter repairs, new grills, landscaping improvements, new color coating for asphalt play areas, etc. See attached CIP project sheet. The Park Board also moved the planned replacement of the Hilltop Park play equipment back from 2011 to 2014. The goal is to replace equipment at 20 years but this equipment is still in great shape - future year replacements will most likely be at/near the 20 -year point for the more heavily used parks. • • EQUIPMENT REPLACEMENT PLAN City of Hopkins, MN (Project # 10-CIP-P017 Project Name Miscellaneous Park Improvements Type Improvement Useful Life Category Parks/Forestry Future 2011 rhrt, 2015 Department Public Works: Parks Contact PW Director Priority n/a Description I 'l'otal Project Cost: 520,000 Improvements to various neighborhood and community parks to maintain safe and enjoyable play areas, shelters and landscaping.
