ESTABLISHING A COMMON CENTER TURN LANE
ON MAINSTREET BETWEEN 5TH TO WASHINGTON AVENUES
Proposed Action.
Staff recommends adoption of the following motion: "Move to
direct staff to establish a common center turn lane on Mainstreet
between 5th to Washinqton Avenues and eliminate all on-street
parking in this area except for retaining the existing parking
restrictions on the south side of the street 125 feet from 5th
Avenue to the east.
Overview.
At the June 7 Council meeting, this issue was discussed with
Council along with other issues relating to the upgrading of this
section of Mainstreet. After discussion on all the issues, staff
was directed to do two tasks. The first task was to talk to Now
Sports to determine if they would like parking to remain across
the street from their store during the common center turn lane
• experiment. The second task was to speak to Burger King and
determine if their entrance could be moved to the west to reduce
turning movement conflicts with the property across the street.
Primary Issues to Consider
o What is the background on this issue?
o What was Now Sports' reaction to the Common Center Turn Lane
idea?
o, What was Burger Kings response to moving their entrance?
SupAOrting Information
o Analysis of issues
o Center turn lane site plan

o Can the present traffic movements be re-established if the
common center turn lane option doesn't work?
As with most all established traffic movements, this one can
be changed in the future if it doesn't work. The only thing
that would be needed is Council action authorizing a change.
