From 08/08/93 to 08/01/94 the HPD responded to 310 animal complaints, 12 of which
involved cats. Six cat bites were reported. -
Unfortunately, this does not paint an accurate picture of the frequency of cat complaints
since many calls are simply handled over the phone ("we don't do cats") and no record
of the contact is kept.
My sense is that we get fairly frequent complaints about cats, perhaps weekly. Most of
these - involve someone reporting a strange cat on their properly, etc.

We are currently investigating a"cat house" on 334 15 AV N. which has generated
complaints about 15 cats being kept in cages in a garage. I believe the Humane
Society has become involved in this particular case.

The City has received a number of compiaints regarding cats. The compiaints tend to
fall in the following categories:
1- Cat bites. Cat bites are infrequent and are covered by the City's dangerous
animal ordinance.
2- The number of cats a househoid has. There is no ordinance limiting the number
of cats that a household may have. There is a limit of two dogs per household.
3- Wandering cats or cats roving about the neighborhood. Controlling wandering
cats would require a major animal control effort including the licensing of cats.
The police department does not keep track ofi every complaint that it receives regarding
cats since there is no ordinance regarding cats. Attached is a memorandum from
Heather Alex concerning animal complaints.
