2005-2006 Annual Report

..
Our annual report is dedicated this year to a very special
group of people - our volunteers!
Volunteerism has a long history at the Center — from those first volunteers who dedi-
cated hours and hours refining the concept of the Family Resource Center — and who
with nervous anticipation opened the Center in April of 1993.
Since that time the Center has grown and added new programs including
Toy Chest, Back to School Supply Drive, Winter WarmWear,
Tax Preparation Assistance, and Project Starfish
One-on-One Support. Throughout this growth and change —
the volunteers have been with us — doing whatever needed to be done.
Our volunteers represent the "heart" of all we do!

Dear Friends
Thank you for your support of the Family Resource Center.
The year has been a challenge. Our community is experiencing new and emerging needs
as well as problems that continue. Families, seniors and single adults call and stop in;
sometimes they have long standing problems and other times they are dealing with new
and frightening issues. As we have always done, all are welcomed with respect and dig-
n ity.
We address those multi-faceted needs in many ways. Our Information & Referral, Food
` Programs, Back to School, Winter WarmWear, Toy Chest, Housing Information, Tax
Preparation Assistance programs are important programs and usually answer the need.
Fortunately, we have Project Starfish to provide individualized support when the one-on-
one approach would be the most helpful and useful.
Your continued support of the work we do is so appreciated. I am always pleased, but
never surprised, by the support of this community. Thank you so much!
Sincerely, and with gratitude,
Mary Tambornino
President, Board of Directors

Back to School
:
Back to Schooi remains our favorite time of the year — with families calling for assistance
with those ever-growing school supply lists! Volunteers play an important role in the sup-
ply drive from arranging collection drives to delivering those donated school suppiies to
the Center. More volunteers soon arrive to sort, count and bag those items — while other
volunteers are busy setting up the Bonus Room where families will choose socks, under-
wear, additional school supplies and that all-important backpack!
School Year 2005 — 2006 827 children supplied
School Year 2004 — 2005 807 children suppiied
Winter WarmWear
, Keepin' kids warm in the winter is something we love to do! Our Winter WarmWear room
` is stocked with jackets, hats, mittens, scarves, boots — and those all important snow-
pants! Volunteers play an active role in the initial set-up of this special room, keeping
the room stocked — and assisting families as they shop for those needed WarmWear
items.
Winter of 2005 — 2006 1,235 items provided
Winter of 2004 — 2005 1,003 items provided
Tax Programs
Our continuing partnership with AccountAbility provides needed tax preparation assis-
tance to those we serve. Customers arrive at the Center from throughout the metro area
— grateful for the service provided by this group of dedicated volunteers. Refunds from
returns prepared at our Center continue to grow — in 2004 we topped the half million dol-
lar mark — a figure appreciated by those we serve and the local economy!
Tax Season 2005 378 customers, $548,630 in refunds
Tax Season 2004 357 customers, $525,613 in refunds

~ Food Programs
Food — the most basic need of all — continues to be an issue in the communities we serve.
Our collaborative effort with Second Harvest Food Bank provides food to those of our
most vulnerable citizens — mothers, children and senior citizens. The first Wednesday of
. ., , .
each month is distribution day - with the truck from Second Harvest pulling up to our
door. Food boxes are quickly unloaded — paperwork completed — and the truck pulis
away. Already the line has begun to form as we begin to hand out the boxes. We've
gotten to know many of the folks who come each month — and look forward to their
arrival. One of the more important projects we do each month.
Food Packages 2005 787 Food Boxes
Food Packages 2004 653 Food Boxes
; Toy Chest
After Back to School — Toy Chest arrives quickly! Families are calling to register —with
; volunteers calling to offer their assistance. Community groups, faith communities and
u businesses cail — ali offering to collect toys and volunteering their time and talents to the
G Toy Chest. Soon it's time to distribute those gifts — and the conference rooms are trans-
' formed to a festive Toy Shop. Volunteers are everywhere — meeting & greeting, refiliing
the Shop shelves and assisting families as they shop. A fun time of the year!

Proj ect Starfish
Project Starfish One-on-One Support continues to grow and change as needs grow and
`` change in our communities. Based on the Starfish story — it has made a difference in the
g lives of those we serve. Each day is different — as Project Starfish moves from one situ-
§ ation to the next. It may start with a mom struggling with a housing issue, followed by
an elderly couple who need budgeting assistance — to a new family in our community
.
looking for household items. Smart Money, our financial literacy program draws cus-
tomers to the Center and the program. We're proud of Project Starfish — as it has pro-
; vided that intensive one-on-one support so often needed by those we serve.

Answering questions is such an important part of the work we do! Questions come from
all segments of the community — and about a multitude of issues — everything from the :
need for food or shelter — to "Where is the nearest shoe repair shop?" (That one is easy
- our neighbor is a shoe repairman!) We pride ourselves in knowing a lot of information
.
— but we're also willing to say we don't know — but we'll find out and return their call.
And we do!
More than 7,188 folks either called or stopped at Center for assistance during the past
year. We received cails from throughout the metro area — greater Minnesota — even
other states! Our Center is also a°safe" place for folks who need access to a phone — or
need to fax an important document.
