APPOINTMENT OF MAYOR PRO TEMPORE
Proposed Action
Staff recommends that the Council approve the following motion: Move approval of Gene
Maxwell as Mavor pro tempore.
Overview
The Fiopkins City Charter, Section 2.06, requires the City Council to choose a Mayor pro
tempore at the first Council meeting in January after a municipal election. The Mayor pro
tempore serves as the presiding officer in the Mayor's absence, and as Acting Mayor in case of
the Mayor's disability or absence from the City.
Since the most recent election, Fran Hesch has served as Mayor pro tempore. Council
member Hesch has requested that the appointment be rotated to Council member Maxwell for
• 1997.
Primarv Issues to Consider
• Which Council member should serve as Mayor Pro Tempore?
Traditionally, the Council member who has served the longest has been chosen as
Mayor Pro Tempore. Council members Hesch and Maxwell were both elected in
1993.
