SUBJECT: Hopkins Artstreet Donations
Last May the City of Hopkins, the Hopkins Business & Civic Association (NBCA), and the Friends of
the Hopkins Center for the Arts launched a new project — Hopkins Artstreet. The project received a
$10,000 grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Commission and $1,000 each from the City and
HBCA. Those funds, along with additional sponsorships, were used to create the pedestals for the art,
pay the artists a small stipend for the lending of their sculpture for a one-year period, and to advertise
Artstreet through a printed brochure. While on display, the artwork was marketed for sale with the
Artstreet project taking a 25% commission.
The offer was made to the community that if a group or individual was willing to buy a piece and
donate it to the City to become part of a permanent collection, Hopkins Artstreet would match their
funds. The Hopkins Historical Society came forward and offered to buy Like a Tree, Rooted in the
Earth by Richards Poey. This piece was the winner of the People's Choice award. With funds
remaining from the City's (and Thinkhopkins.com) and HBCA's initial contributions, it was decided to
buy the Children's Choice award winner, Shoo -Shoe Train by Kyle Fokken. The commissions from
the sale of these two pieces will be used to continue the project into 2012/2013.
The two donated sculptures will stay in their original placements and will be cared for by City staff as
well as community volunteers. Staff is currently looking into lighting for the art at the Clock Tower
Plaza. Representatives of the Hopkins Historical Society and HBCA will be at the May 15, 2012, City
Council meeting to officially donate the pieces and receive our thanks.
Hopkins Artstreet Il is set to launch May 18, 2012, with the installation of four new sculptures on
Mainstreet and in front of City Hall.
