October 9, 2012
A joint work session of the City Council and Zoning and Planning Commission was held on October 9,
2012, at 5:00 p.m. in the Raspberry Room of Hopkins City Hall.
Present were Mayor Gene Maxwell, City Council members Molly Cummings, Jason Gadd, Cheryl
Youakim, and Kristi Halverson, Planning Commission Members Doug Datta, Andrew Fisher, Aaron
Kuznia, Jennifer Allard, Scott Kerssen, and Charles Firth.
Also present were staff members Mike Mornson, Kersten Elverum, Nancy Anderson and Tara Beard.
The New Normal panel was Gordon Hughes, Frank Clark, Rusty Fifield, Paul Fate, Jeff McMenimen,
and Cathy Bennett.
Mayor Maxwell called the work session to order at 5:00 p.m.
Gordon Hughes welcomed everyone. Mr. Hughes stated that this was the 14th New Normal workshop
that they have completed, and Urban Land Institute (ULI) sponsored the workshop.
Mr. Hughes reviewed what has happened in the economy since the recession.
Mr. Hughes turned the session over to Cathy Bennett. Ms. Bennett reviewed the changes in
demographics for Hopkins from 2004 to 2010.
At this time Mr. Hughes turned the session over to the panel.
Some of the themes of the panel were the following:
• Gen Y and Baby Boomers are similar
• Gen Y and Baby Boomers want a sense of place
The panel discussed the assets of Hopkins
• Genuine downtown
• Sidewalks/walkable
• School district
• LRT
• Bike trails
• Housing choices
The work session ended at approximately 7:00 p.m.
