Memo: Zoning and Planning Update - Fences and SignsMEMO

Subject: Fences and Signs
Fences
With the warm weather residents start building fences. This is a reminder to residents
who want to construct a fence, that a permit is required. The cost of a permit is $10.00.
II. Requirements
The Zoning Ordinance requires that residential fences be at least 25 percent open and
no more than four feet high in the front yard and between homes. Examples of types of
fences that meet the requirements are chain link and alternating board. The first picture
is of an alternating board fence. The second picture is of a solid fence that is not
permitted.
III. Signs
Another topic that gets attention in the summer is signs in/on public right-of-ways.
Signs on public right-of-ways are not allowed with the exception of a part of the
downtown area. Signs, displays of merchandise, etc., are allowed in the right-of-way
adjacent to the business district location. The enforcement of signs in right-of-ways is
under the jurisdiction of the Public Works department. Many of these complaints or
inquiries are sent to the Planning department because the Planning department issues
commercial sign permits. In cooperation with Public Works and especially Jay
Strachota, these illegal signs are removed as time allows when complaints are received.
