MOTION TO Adopt a Proclamation celebrating March as Women’s History Month in
Hopkins.
OVERVIEW
Women’s History Month is celebrated annually in March, with the 2026 national theme
being “Women Shaping a Sustainable Future.”
Women have played an important role in shaping policies, businesses, education,
healthcare, science, and civic life and the City wishes to recognize the diverse women
whose work in sustainability, conservation, and public service to create a healthier and
more just future for all.
Tonight, City staff would like to celebrate Women’s History Month and to recognize the
heritage of women in scientific fields. With support from women like Brooke Roper, a
climate storyteller who worked with the City as a part of the recent Hopkins Climate
Solutions Plan, the City is striving to be a leader in sustainable problem solving and
planning for the benefit of all residents.

A Proclamation Celebrating Women’s History Month
WHEREAS, to coincide with International Women’s Day on March 8th, Women’s History
Month has been commemorated annually in March since 1987; and
WHEREAS, Women’s History Month provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate
the vital contributions of women to the history, culture, and progress of our nation and our
community; and
WHEREAS, the 2026 national theme, “Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,” honors
women whose leadership, innovation, and advocacy advance environmental
stewardship, social responsibility, and economic resilience for future generations; and
WHEREAS, women have played—and continue to play—an essential role in shaping
policies, businesses, education, healthcare, science, and civic life in ways that strengthen
communities and promote sustainability; and
WHEREAS, the City of Hopkins recognizes the diverse women whose work in
sustainability, conservation, community planning, and public service create a healthier,
more equitable, and more prosperous future; and
WHEREAS, acknowledging the achievements of women throughout history inspires
future generations to pursue leadership, creativity, and service in addressing the
challenges of a changing world;
NOW THEREFORE, I, Patrick Hanlon, Mayor of the City of Hopkins in the State of
Minnesota, along with my fellow Council Members, recognize, adopt, and proclaim March
as a celebration of Women’s History Month and invite all residents to discover the history
of women, not only in science, but in each and every walk of life.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set
my hand and caused the Seal of the City of
Hopkins, Minnesota to be affixed this 3rd day of
March in the year 2026.
